MUCH has been written about the rise of the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and the shift in economic power eastward as Asia outruns the rest of the world. But the surprising success story of the past decade lies elsewhere. An analysis by The Economist finds that over the ten years to 2010, no fewer than six of the world’s ten fastest-growing economies were in sub-Saharan Africa (see table).
The only BRIC country to make the top ten was China, in second place behind Angola. The other five African sprinters were Nigeria, Ethiopia, Chad, Mozambique and Rwanda, all with annual growth rates of around 8% or more. During the two decades to 2000 only one African economy (Uganda) made the top ten, against nine from Asia. On IMF forecasts Africa will grab seven of the top ten places over the next five years (our ranking excludes countries with a population of less than 10m as well as Iraq and Afghanistan, which could both rebound strongly in the years ahead).

One of the persons that made a great and lasting impact on me when I was in Kigali, is the very humble and at the same time very energetic entrepreneur and professor from Columbia University, Mr Josh Ruxin. Josh has worked and lived with his family in the Capital of Rwanda, Kigali, for a few years now and this article is an update on what is going on in Rwanda at this very moment. Here is his take on Rwanda which last year was the number one reformer in the world, and last month, the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report had Rwanda leading its East African counterparts in economic innovation, financial markets, and infrastructure. The photo is taken by Kit Cody at Rwanda Works and shows how fiber optic cable is being installed all over the country. Josh’s the Founder and Director of the Millenium Villages in Rwanda, he’s also the Founder of Rwanda Works, as well as the Access Project. Here’s his last article from the New York Times named “Rwanda’s road to progress”.

During February 2010 the Founder & CEO of Africa’s Potential, Emre Gürler, held a lecture for the business students (Civilekonomprogrammet) at the Linnaeus University‘s School of Management and Economics.
The lecture was a mix between how to get inspired to climb out of your comfort zone and to actually dare to take a look outside the security barriers that we in the Western world have created. We have to do this in order to see the vast opportunities that exist in for example the East-African region. A large reason why the world is waking up slowly is due to the fact of the African stereotypes and negative massmedia portrayal of the African continent. Or rather, the lack of focus on the success stories of the continent. There has to be a more balanced massmedia picture of the African continent in order to make the general public aware of the vast opportunities that actually exist. What is the first thing that comes into your mind when you hear the word Africa? Is it positive or negative and why is that?

“Africa must attract broad investment, not rely on handouts, if we are to sustain development”
There is a debate among geopolitical and economic commentators about the merits of Chinese versus western involvement with Africa. One argument is that Chinese investment is exploitative and undermines the development of democracy and human rights on the continent. Others view the matter in terms of competition, arguing that China is encroaching on the decades-long monopoly of the west over Africa’s natural resources.
Neither of these viewpoints addresses the core issues. First, major players in global investment and development are discussing Africa without engaging its people as equal partners. Second, Africans are not seen to be proactive in setting their own priorities and terms of engagement.

The Vision 2020 in Rwanda is something that almost all the entrepreneurs that I met in Kigali was keen on re-telling to me. Leapfrogging development is a term which is often mentioned in the developing world and the world hasn’t seen a real strong evidence/case, not until Rwanda emerged on the global development map!
