The True Size of Africa & Immapancy.

true-size-of-africaAn interesting perspective on how we often missjudge the size of the continents of the world. Kai Krausse gives us his contribution to the rampant IMMAPANCY, “insufficent geographical knowledge”. It’s not all about illiteracy and innumeracy! A survey with American schoolkids let them guees the population and land area of their country. Not entirely unexpected answers, but still rather unsettling, the majority chose “1-2 billion” and “largest in the world”respectively.

This single image tries to embody the massive scale, which is larger then the USA, China, India, Japan and all of Europe…combined! Note: Click on the image in order to zoom.

While I admire the author’s innovative attempt to rebut widespread misconceptions about Africa’s size relative to other parts of the world, this graphic is itself disingenuous. I would imagine, for example, that Scandinavians, Ukrainians, and Moldovans would be chagrined to discover that their countries are no longer part of Europe. Residents of Alaska and Hawaii might feel the same: last time I checked, they’re still included in the United States. Indeed, all US citizens might be surprised to see that their nation is the now the fourth-largest behind China…even though it still has more area.
